Applying Data Mining Techniques to the Real Estate Market: Using Google Trends to Understand US Real Estate

CoreLogic, Census, HUD – these are the traditional sources we have relied on in the past to provide data to analyze the real estate market. Unfortunately, these providers are oftentimes too limited, or too expensive, for our needs. We present an alternative resource, available at no cost to all: Google Trends.

Several sample analyses from the white paper are presented below:

“Apartment Rent”: demonstrates the seasonality of the rental market

“Mortgage”: shows the mortgage market has less distinct seasonal behavior than rentals; also shows the slowdown during the financial crisis

“Homes Sale”: shows the migration to home ownership instead of rentals in Houston

“Studio Apartment”: shows the prevalence of studio apartments in New York City
